How to read a bullion product specification

Bullion specification method covering product identity, year, metal, gross and fine weight, fineness, dimensions, edge, finish, marks, package, and tolerance.

A specification is useful only when it belongs to the item being evaluated. Follow this method before buying, receiving, or testing a bullion product.

Step 1: lock the identity

Write issuer, product name, product number, year, denomination, size, and finish. Distinguish bullion from proof, reverse proof, uncirculated, and commemorative versions. A stock image without a year is not enough.

Step 2: name the physical parts

For coins, record obverse, reverse, edge, rim, field, relief, inscriptions, date, mint mark, privy mark, and artist initials. The U.S. Mint's coin anatomy reference defines those parts and distinguishes plain, reeded, lettered, and decorated edges plus common finishes. Its terminology does not verify another mint's coin.

For bars, record the main face, reverse, sides, corners, hallmark, assay stamp, serial, weight statement, fineness, date, and package.

Step 3: parse the mass fields

Create three cells:

  • Gross weight
  • Fineness
  • Fine-metal content

If fine content is absent, calculate it and mark it "calculated," not "issuer stated." Do not mix grams and troy ounces in an unlabeled column. Retain enough decimal places to expose rounding.

The device behind the number matters as much as the number. California's Division of Measurement Standards states in its guidance on commercial scales that a scale used for commercial purposes must be of a type approved before use, must be inspected, tested and sealed by a county weights and measures office, and remains the owner's responsibility to keep accurate. A weight taken on an unapproved kitchen scale is a private observation, not a commercial measurement, and a specification sheet should record which of the two it is.

Step 4: record dimensions and tolerance

Coins commonly publish diameter and sometimes thickness. Bars may publish length, width, thickness, or recommended ranges. Note whether measurements apply to a bare item, capsule, card, or box.

Write nominal value, lower limit, upper limit, unit, and source. If no tolerance is published, do not invent one from online discussion.

Step 5: distinguish composition from finish

Composition describes material. Finish describes surface production and appearance. A proof coin is not necessarily purer than its bullion counterpart. A frosted device, mirrored field, burnishing, or special handling can change premium without changing fine content.

Step 6: map markings by location

Create a simple table:

Location matters because counterfeiters can reproduce text while placing it incorrectly. Yet correct placement still does not prove composition.

Step 7: describe packaging as a component

Record capsule, tube, assay card, tamper seal, film, certificate, box, label, and matching serial. State whether packaging is original, replacement, opened, damaged, or absent. Learn whether opening changes returns or bids.

Step 8: identify source scope

Label each source as issuer product page, standard, general glossary, dealer listing, archived catalog, or secondary reference. Record access date and effective year. If a standard describes wholesale bars, do not apply it to a retail coin.

Step 9: compare observed evidence

At receipt, enter raw measurements and photographs without forcing them to match. Note scale resolution, calibration, caliper method, package state, lighting, and operator. Repeat a surprising measurement after checking technique.

Escalate when several facts conflict, a serial differs, a security feature is missing, or a reading remains outside a sound published range. Do not scratch or open first.

Common questions

Is fine weight the same as gross weight?

Only for a theoretically pure product. Alloy and stated fineness can make them different.

Does proof describe purity?

No. Proof is a production finish. Composition must be read separately.

What if the mint page has changed?

Use an archived official copy where possible and label its date and product number.

Can I round 31.103 grams to one household ounce?

No. Troy and avoirdupois ounces are different units.
